All about the Recruitment and Retention Committee |
There was a group of Hutchinson Hospital board members and local physicians that met up for an annual planning session. One of the top priorities in local health care, they decided, is doctor recruitment and Hutchinson is not alone. These days Recruitment has become a national issue. Bigger cities are preferred by doctors and the next choice would be smaller communities. With this mindset the smallest communities are the ones suffering.
For the Hutchinson Hospital director though there are already 8 new doctors they are still short hand and could use more in Hutchinson. Here the number of staff is always the same. When doctors are arrives some manage to leave of retire so the need for more still arises. They cooperate with the clinics and anyone who tries to bring doctors to town.
For this hospital they have a Recruitment and Retention Committee to develop a recruitment plan. Consequently the hospital now funds half of the recruitment effort, including travel, lodging and doctor search fees, if a national search agency is used. The fees will normally reach about $15,000 to $20,000.
He said that they could commit several hundred thousand dollars under that scenario, if they were to recruit all of the physicians they need. Hospitals become great because of the doctors that work with them. Many can say this is a symbiotic relationship.
The payment of doctors is not the factor that makes them decide to move. The study by a national physician research firm based in Irving, Texas states that financial security ranks fifth on a list of 10 requirements for primary care physicians. Strangely even if a group of new local doctors agreed none mentions money was why they moved to town.
For this doctor the quality of the Hutchinson Clinic and the lifestyle was what caught his eye. Typically the medical community has a big turnover. Doctors need to be in a comfortable situation in order to say. Doctors always have the option to leave or move.
There is an equal importance to both the work environment and the city says this doctor. For doctors though there is competition in bigger cities, the small towns are still preferred. For the chief financial officer at the Hutchinson Clinic it is the town the many doctors get attracted to.
Most people that stay in this town have made up their mind that they want to work in a town this size. What they are after is a place where they are able to raise a family, come to a facility with the medical technology that is state of the art with a good hospital both of which this community has. It is notable that Hutchinson's main selling point also makes it tougher for local administrators to recruit.
